Jargon What is
Oxidation?
Oxidization is a chemical process that is used to
change the color of a metal. Jewelry may be dipped in a solution made with an oxidizing agent, such as Liver of Sulfur, to create the
desired effect. Patina is the color or finish that a piece of jewelry takes on after undergoing the chemical oxidization process. Often
this patina is polished away in areas, leaving a bright finish that contrasts with the darker patinated places to add depth and richness to a
piece of handcrafted jewelry. Without this polishing, the patinated finish retains a warm matte luster.

Meet the
Artist Kristina
Kada
Inspired by the many shapes found in
everyday objects, botanical forms, and architecture, Kristina Kada of Satomi Studio uses simple elements in repetition to build up richly textured
patterns and interesting forms in her unique handcrafted jewelry. By using traditional jewelry techniques, steel stakes, and a hydraulic press, she
creates hollow forms as well as repetitious shapes.
Where do you draw
inspiration for your work? "I never set out to create jewelry that followed a Japanese artistic tradition, but I
grew up surrounded by Japanese artwork, furniture and culture. While my handcrafted jewelry has a contemporary edge, I see these influences
in my simple floral forms, the placement of the elements I use, and the asymmetry of
my designs "
Why do you use oxidization in your jewelry designs? "I
believe that negative space is just as important as positive space when creating art. I use the rich black tones that I achieve with
oxidization to create that negative space in my jewelry designs."
What jewelry do
you wear? "I frequently wear the larger, oxidized
floral rings that I create. They always get a lot of attention. I also wear my pendants with the Kumihimo cord - they work well with both casual and
dressy outfits."
