Jargon What is Sea
Glass?
Sea glass, or beach glass, comes from bottles and other discarded items that have been tumbled by the water
and sand of the ocean into smooth, frosted glass gems. Sea glass colors range from the more common greens, blues, and ambers to the very rare reds,
purples, and blacks. Sea glass can be smooth, frosted, curved, and textured - often with raised text and other indications of its origins. Washed
ashore by the ocean, sea glass is gathered and collected by beachcombers. Jewelry artists use sea glass gems in their jewelry designs much like
gemstones, creating recycled, wearable works of art.

Meet the
Artist Jessica Lee
Born to parents who are both painters, it was only natural for Jessica Lee to pursue a career in the
arts. Jessica studied jewelry design and silver work at college in San Francisco, where she apprenticed under several prominent silversmiths.
With the use of imagination, Jessica takes the discards of the past and gives them new life, transforming them into things of beauty. Her challenge is
to utilize recyclable items that will lend themselves to today's fashion.
Where do you draw inspiration for your
work? "I have always been inspired by Rene Lalique, the glass maker and jewelry designer, for his creativity, his
craftsmanship, and the quality of his work, as well as the materials he used - especially the sterling silver and
glass."
Why do you use sea glass in
your jewelry? "I started using stained glass in my jewelry
and a friend suggested that I visit Glass Beach in Fort Bragg, California. I couldn't believe how beautiful the sea glass that
I found was. I like the idea of taking discarded items and turning them into treasures again. Initially, my work was designed to
exclusively feature the sea glass. Over time, my designs have evolved and now represent a balance between the sea glass and sterling silver,
which showcases the sea glass really well."
What jewelry do you
wear? "I almost exclusively wear my own coke-bottle green
sea glass earrings - they go with everything!"
